Trend Recap: Stripes

October 13, 2016

A serious Stripe Situation is happening today in fashion. In most runway shows, whether debuted in New York, Paris, London or Milan, the chances of stripes playing a key role in any given designer’s collection was high. The historically nautical print is no longer just reserved for a preppy, New England sailing school aesthetic. Stripes are being re-examined and interpreted in many different ways and on unexpected shapes and fabrics. In other words, your favorite “go-to” print is becoming less standard and more high- fashion. Carolina Herrera’s bold black and white stripes on a corseted gown transform a feminine silhouette into a goth-chic look. The heavy black eye make-up, red lipstick, and pink blush enhance this juxtaposition between traditional and edgy. Horizontal stripes looked classically sporty but not boring on Proenza Schouler and Opening Ceremony’s catwalks. In graphic primary colors, they looked far from juvenile, but rather nodded to their preppy roots while still appearing fresh and innovative. Loafers will make your striped look polished and work-appropriate. Wear sneakers or Birkenstocks to totally embrace the athleisure essence. Timid of a head-to-toe striped look? You can still participate in a dose of the print without a fill commitment. Choose a very on-trend, striped long-sleeve knit shirt or sweater and pair it with flared jeans and clogs for a very 70’s inspired fall look. The only boundary? Unless you are planning to be a character on “Orange is the New Black” for Halloween, White and Orange should be avoided at all costs

Styling

Don’t fear your closet, embrace it! Let’s face it, for many of us fashion feels like a never-ending tide of chic looks, must-have handbags, jaw-dropping shoes and bold accessories. Keeping up with trends is expensive, knowing how to work with the clothes you already own seems tricky, and dressing to cover your perceived flaws feels like an exercise in futility. Not any longer. Fashion and styling isn’t about expensive designers or the . . .
