Corsets have made an unlikely style resurrection and have proved their place as a relevant trend. Who knew that anything from the 1800’s would make it back into the limelight? Don’t worry though, the modern take on corsets won’t leave you gasping for breath. A defined waist is always sexy and feminine, but not when it causes actual pain! Designers have created both literal and less-obvious interpretations of corsets- none of which look too exaggerated or costume-y. In the Spring/Summer 2017 shows at New York Fashion Week, the range of iterations was clear. Tibi showed a more obvious corset- inspired look that was surprisingly quite wearable. A long black dress with a waist clinching corset on top is unexpected to the masses, but trend-right to the fashion savvy. TIbi’s denim corset was not reminiscent of lingerie either, which makes the look appropriate. With curved piping, Carolina Herrera’s denim gown was inspired by corsets, as well. But again, the casual fabric makes the look less scandalous, and more wearable. Only the brave will try out clinches, ties and other body-shapers as external garments first, but the trend has the potential to go mainstream.
