CONSIGN
Consignment is a great option for your lightly worn and seasonal items that have higher price tags as well as vintage items. If you have some older pieces that are in great condition, consignment might be a good fit. The top items stores look for are branded purses, vintage (anything 20 years or older in great condition), and designer clothes that are less than 3 years old. If you don’t have a consignment store near you try, thredUP or Poshmark.

DONATE
For pieces you don’t want to consign look for alternative donation places in your community. Many communities have donation programs that give back to a local non-profit. A great example locally, here in Charleston, is Closet Case Thrift, a thrift store that benefits We Are Family. We Are Family is a non-profit organization that provides LGBTQI+ youths affirming spaces through direct support, leadership development, and community engagement.

RECYCLE
Recycle your clothes that are too worn to donate or consign. More and more clothing brands are taking a sustainability approach to the way they do business. Many are adding recycling programs, making it easier to keep textiles out of our landfills, which makes a direct impact on the environment.

If you live in a city, and want to drop off all your clothes in one place, then find your nearest H&M store. They will take your old worn clothes (from any brand in any condition) as part of their Garment Collecting Program. Find donation bins by the registers in their stores. To be safe, call first to make sure the store in your area is accepting donations.

If you don’t have an H&M nearby, don’t worry. Many recycling centers take textiles and turn them into auto cloths and rags. Look for recycling drop-off bins, too, like Greenzone.

The initiative, Blue Jeans Go Green, recycles your denim and has several partnerships with some brand favorites such as Rag & Bone and Madewell. Also, there are several companies and non-profits that have mail-in programs you can send your worn clothing.
