‘Tis the season to be stunning and if there is ever a time you can get away with over-the-top sparkle and sequins, it’s over the next few weeks. Although sequins are actually a year-round option we tend to see them more often during the holiday season. Like any piece that makes a statement, there are some fashion rules to follow. So, here are some tips to ensure you’re wearing your sequins successfully.
The first thing to keep in mind when adding stylist sequins to your outfit is to keep it simple. The more you overthink your outfit, the more likely it is to head in the wrong direction. Keep your lines simple and silhouettes classic by selecting sequined pieces like t-shirts, tanks and skirts. When it comes to showing some sparkle, simple is always best to keep your look natural and effortlessly chic.
Secondly, keep things minimal. If your sequin piece is bold in color or pattern, stick to wearing only one sequin piece per outfit. If you have more subtle sequin pieces, items that are made with one color and the sequins are smaller in size, you can combine multiple sequin items in one outfit. You just don’t want to overdose on sparkle and end up looking like you’re going to a theme party. You want your sequins to look natural and feel natural so they should be worked into your outfit in a way that adds to it and not overpower it.
The third tip is: don’t take sequins too seriously. Sequins are typically more dressy and can always be paired with a silk top for a classic, evening look. But a stylist way to wear sequins this season involves pairing them with something a little more relaxed like denim or even plaid. Wearing a denim chambray shirt or a plaid top with a sequin skirt or a sequined blazer and t-shirt with skinny jeans is an effortlessly cool way to bring on some sparkle.
Lastly, incorporate sequins at your own pace. If you’re not sold on committing to an all over sequin shift dress or a shimmering mini, pair a shiny handbag or shoes with your day or nighttime outfit. Sequined accessories can be included in your everyday look if worn in neutral metallic colors like black, gold, silver, pewter, copper or rose gold. For evening, pump up your look by adding sequins in bold colors like reds, pinks and blues.
