What to Wear for the Apple Shape Figure

March 13, 2019

It’s What to Wear Wednesday and today is all about the Apple Shape. If you’ve missed the past few weeks, I’ve been giving What to Wear versus What Not to Wear clothing tips for the Pear/Triangle Shape, the Banana/Rectangle Shape as well as the Hourglass shape.  And, today, I’m going to get more in depth with the Apple or the Oval body shape.

If you are an Apple shape then you have broad shoulders; your bust is average to large, your waist is larger than your bust and your hips, and you have good legs.  The goal with this body shape is to de-emphasize your mid-section, enhance your shoulders and bust, and bring focus to your lower half.

Before I get into the best tops for the Apple Figure, it’s most important to point out that getting properly fitted for a bra at a local lingerie boutique is extremely important.  I highly recommend a boutique over a big-box lingerie store because boutiques will match you to a bra, not a bra to you – and there is a huge difference. Apple Body Shapes need the girls to be separated from the stomach, so a bra true to your size is essential.  This will allow for clothing to fall in all the right ways on your body.

So, now, we can talk about the most flattering top styles to wear:

With the Apple Shape figure, v-necks, tops that taper at the waist, semi-fitted or drapey tops, empire-cut tops and dress as well as wrap tops, are the most flattering for you.  Look for tops and jackets that finish just above the hip bone.  You do want to avoid tops that have pockets, are tightly fitted, are boxy, or heavily detailed around the waist.  Also, avoid tops made in small prints and be careful about tucking in your shirts.  And, typically, spaghetti straps nor cap sleeves will enhance your best assets.

Those of you with an Apple Shape have very nice legs, so show them.  Bottoms such as knee-length, A-line, straight or slightly flared skirts look fabulous on you.  Pants such as pocketed cargos, and motos are extremely complimentary for your figure.  Go with a slight boot-cut or a straight-leg jean or pant.  Pants that have a side zip will prevent any additional bulk at your waistline.  And bottoms that have some stretch like a ponte knit will hug you in all of the right places.

You do want to avoid ruffled, gathered, accordian and other “bulky” styled bottoms.  Avoid the boxy styles as well as the super fitted, bodycon, styles.  And, although you have good legs, it’s best that you don’t go overly short with your skirts and shorts, as you want to avoid looking too imbalanced from top to bottom.

If you would like more information about dressing the Apple Shape, please leave me a note below or feel free to message me directly.  For a style tip video on the Apple Shape, link here: Alexandra Styles. Next week, I’ll be talking about the last of the body shapes, the Strawberry or Inverted Triangle figure.  In the meantime, have a great week.

xo,

Alexandra

Don’t fear your closet, embrace it! Let’s face it, for many of us fashion feels like a never-ending tide of chic looks, must-have handbags, jaw-dropping shoes and bold accessories. Keeping up with trends is expensive, knowing how to work with the clothes you already own seems tricky, and dressing to cover your perceived flaws feels like an exercise in futility. Not any longer. Fashion and styling isn’t about expensive designers or the . . .
