We can thank Scottish shepherds for Houndstooth, a print and technique that has roots dating back to the 19th century countryside. Today, Houndstooth is still relevant and has only become more fashionable throughout the years. It’s in the warm tweed and wool fabrics, it’s in the same family as plaids, and it is both seasonal and ideal for fall and winter dressing. The print is a great combination of preppy and modern and can be styled with either aesthetic in mind. With the “Granny-chic” trend led by Gucci that is happening right now in fashion, Houndstooth feels more “en vogue” than ever. Pair your coat or skirt with a fur scarf, loafers, and tights to really play into the aesthetic. A top-handle satchel and large glasses (faux or real) will round out your geeky, lady-like look. On the other hand, Houndstooth can look sleek, chic, and minimalistic. The print made a jump to popularity in the 1960’s when “mod” was trending…think Twiggy’s shift dress and a bob haircut. The over-sized graphic print in black and white can feel very Warhol-esque. Try a 60’s-inspired skirt in the motif paired-down with a blouse and booties. No matter how you style it, Houndstooth is an important print of the season.
