You may have noticed that the fashion trend has shifted from low-rise pants to high-waisted pants. Today’s post is all about the “do’s” and “don’ts” when it comes to wearing high-waisted pants.
So, what’s to love about the high-waisted pant? Primarily, they give you a waist. You should choose a pant that finishes at your natural waistline and not above it. Your natural waistline is 2-3 inches above your hip bone. The high-waisted pant is great for hiding love handles and belly bulges. They keep our shirts tucked in and we when sit down we aren’t exposing our backside to the world.
Hallelujah!
So how do you complete your high-waisted pant look? For all pant styles, with the exception of a skinny pant, your top should end where your pants begin. You can do this two ways.
1. Tuck in your shirt.
2. Wear a top that is cropped.
I hope the words, “crop top” don’t send you running for the hills. This doesn’t mean you will show your mid-section. A crop top with a high-waisted pant will still give you the coverage that you need.
One item you want to avoid when wearing high-waisted pants are bulky jackets. Bulky jackets create a boxy shape and make your waist appear wider. This gives you almost no shape. Instead, pair a high-waisted pant with a streamlined jacket, blazer, a long cardigan or a duster.
The high-waisted pant can be worn as various leg styles. As I mentioned last week, some include the straight leg, the bootcut, the skinny and the wide leg pant. No matter what your body shape is, you want to avoid a high-waisted pant that is too flowy. It’s too much fabric and the bulk of the fabric will throw off the balance of your lower body. Also, the high-waisted pant makes enough of a statement so avoid heavy embellishments along the waistline such as over-sized belts and layered fabric like peplum.
Finally, avoid over-accessorizing. The high-waisted pant gives the illusion that it’s shortening the torso. So, avoid overly embellished tops, large necklaces, and big totes that finish at your natural waistline. This will help from over-emphasizing your upper half and keep the balance between your upper and lower body.
